I did some research because I know zilch about cosplay. Here are some topics we could use for study material:
- Just basic “What is Cosplay?” Pros: you know it. It’ll cover basic vocabulary. Cons: It might put you to sleep because you already know it.
- The Origins of Cosplay: Pros: You might not know it. Cons: Probably more difficult vocabulary and sentence structure–just guessing.
- Why People Cosplay: Pros: Interesting topic. Cons: might be difficult. But if it’s interesting, you can handle more difficult material.
- The State of Cosplay in 2025: It’ll probably sound like a newspaper article from the Nikkei Shimbun.
- Modern Technological Integration: Just an overview of stuff like 3D printing, LED integration, advanced materials, digital design tools like Blender. Might be useful for learning the vocabulary if you need it.
- The Influence of Social Media on Cosplay: Kinda interesting to me. I don’t do TikTok at all and Instagram very little because they’re time sucks.
- Emerging trends in 2025: Digital cosplay, sustainability (eco-friendliness), inclusivity, gender fluidity
- Conventions
- Competitions: Can do conventions and competitions separately or together. Competitions are a deep topic: Skills divisions, construction categories, judging criteria,
- Materials and Crafting Techniques: This could get long and technical. Maybe not a good topic, but what do I know.
- Community Etiquette and Guidelines: all kinds of interesting subcategories
- Getting started: choose a character, budget and plan, building skills you need
- The Future of Cosplay
If someone were to write a book like, “How to Explain Cosplay to your Middle-aged Parents” the outline would be something like this. And if you were able to talk about each of these topics in Japanese, that would be pretty darn good.
